AS-800 Series · Area Sensor

8-beam object detection across a wide sensing zone.

The Dolphin Device AS-800 is a slim through-beam area sensor for industrial object presence and passage detection. A separate transmitter and receiver create eight parallel infrared channels across a 110 mm active sensing length, with an installation distance of up to 3 metres.

Designed for industrial object detection

The AS-800 is not a single-point proximity sensor. It monitors a vertical field using eight optical channels, making it useful when an object can appear at different heights or when a wider detection zone is preferred.

Eight beam channels

Eight parallel optical paths span the sensing zone instead of relying on one detection point.

Up to 3 m separation

Transmitter and receiver can be mounted across conveyors, machine openings and passage zones.

DC

10–24 V industrial supply

Designed for common low-voltage DC control systems with PNP or NPN output variants.

NO

NO / NC choices

Choose normally-open or normally-closed logic to match the machine input philosophy.

How the AS-800 works

The TX and RX units face each other. The transmitter drives the eight infrared channels in a synchronized sequence. The receiver evaluates the corresponding optical paths. When an object interrupts the sensing field, the receiver changes the white-wire output according to the selected model logic.

Object-detection device — not a personnel-safety light curtain.

Use the AS-800 for presence, passage and machine-process detection. Do not use it as the sole protective device for safeguarding people.

Typical applications

The wide detection window is useful where a single-point photoelectric sensor may miss an object because its vertical position changes.

Conveyor object detection

Detect boxes, pouches, parts or packages as they pass between the transmitter and receiver.

Stack / material presence

Monitor whether an object or stack occupies any part of the 110 mm sensing field.

Robotics and machine transfer

Confirm part passage, hand-off, fixture loading or motion through a defined machine opening.

Small-part passage checking

Use multiple beams to improve detection coverage where the object may not pass through one exact point.

Packaging and counting

Detect product presence across a wider field for packaging, batching or machine-cycle confirmation.

Opening / passage monitoring

Monitor an industrial opening or transfer zone for object interruption, without using the sensor for personnel safety.

Product appearance

A slim transmitter and receiver pair keeps the sensing window compact while providing a clearly defined optical field.

Electrical wiring

TX and RX share the same 10–24 V DC supply and common 0 V. The black wires form the synchronization/clock connection between the two units. The RX white wire is the switched output to the machine input or load.

Clock wiring matters.

Connect the black clock wire from TX directly to the black clock wire on RX. Do not use the black wire as an output. Keep TX, RX, power supply and the connected load/PLC on a common 0 V reference.

Installation sequence

A clean installation depends mainly on alignment, common grounding and correct clock wiring.

1

Mount TX and RX

Install the transmitter and receiver facing one another across the sensing path. Keep the optical windows parallel.

2

Power both units

Connect red to +10–24 V DC and blue to the common 0 V / GND for both TX and RX.

3

Connect clock

Join the black TX wire directly to the black RX wire so the optical channels remain synchronized.

4

Connect and test output

Connect the RX white wire to the PLC input or compatible load and confirm the selected PNP/NPN and NO/NC logic.

Selection and design notes

Use these points when deciding whether an area sensor is more suitable than a single photoelectric sensor.

Use area sensing when height varies

If the object may pass at different vertical positions, multiple beams provide more coverage than one fixed optical point.

15

Understand the pitch

Beam pitch is 15 mm. Validate actual objects at the final installation distance, especially for very small or thin targets.

Maintain clean optics

Keep both windows clean and free from dust, oil film or physical obstruction for reliable through-beam operation.

Align the full length

Good alignment across the complete active field is more important than aligning just one channel.

Frequently asked questions

Quick answers for design, purchasing and installation teams.

What is the AS-800 designed to detect?

It is designed for industrial object presence and passage detection across an 8-beam optical field. Typical targets include packages, machine parts, stacked material and objects moving through an opening.

Can the transmitter and receiver be separated by 3 metres?

Yes. The supplied specification lists a sensing range of up to 3 m between TX and RX, provided the units are properly aligned and the optical path is suitable.

What is the difference between P1, P2, N1 and N2?

P models are PNP outputs and N models are NPN outputs. The “1” versions are normally open (NO), while the “2” versions are normally closed (NC).

What does the black wire do?

The black wire is the synchronization / clock link. Connect the TX black wire directly to the RX black wire. It is not the sensor output.

Can this replace a certified safety light curtain?

No. The AS-800 is an object-detection area sensor / light-curtain-style sensor and should not be used as the sole personnel-safety safeguarding device.
